One of the biggest jewellery exhibitions in Hong Kong celebrates its 41st anniversary this week with self-designed diamonds and natural jewels, introducing international craftsmanship found nowhere else.
The exhibition, International Jewellery Show, runs from March 4 to 8th. Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, Deputy Executive Sophia Chong believes this will provide “a one-stop jewellery sourcing platform” for clients, featuring coloured diamonds and custom-made jewellery. Wholesale prices at the exhibition start from $100 USD, highlighting affordable pieces at the venue.
Mak from Unity sells natural coloured jewels and diamonds. Sourcing from the roughs of South Africa and Russia, then manufactured in India, Mak wants the best for his clients. “My brand is a unique collection of fancy colours,” he says. “Pink, green, blue, yellow. Everything is natural.”
Mak has been in the jewellery business for 16 years, but he only started Unity in 2013. His favourite is the pink diamond, and he hopes the show will bring more clients from overseas who will appreciate natural pieces. “Pink diamond is a rare thing,” he says. “It’s best for rings and necklaces.”
Natthapunnapa from Dhevan Dara Gallery brings her family business of 30 years to the show. This is her 19th year showcasing her own self-designed gemstones from Thailand. “I’ve grown up with this business,” she says. “My sister also designed her diamond jewellery.”
Nattapunnapa is both a lawyer and a businesswoman, but she recognises the importance of design in jewellery and the competition behind it. She has learned to navigate through it. “I know that some company can sell a hundred times more, but we are wholesalers and we like to explore a lot of ideas and new designs,” she says. “Everyone has their businesses and their clients. Sometimes my clients are also their clients so it’s not a problem.”
In the friendly competitive setting at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, sellers can interact with buyers in the show and explore designs beyond compare.
